Why Does My Shih Tzu Shake?
Shaking can be a brief response to cold, excitement, fear, or anticipation, but it can also accompany pain, nausea, low blood sugar, ear disease, toxin exposure, fever, neurologic illness, or weakness. The meaning depends on what happened before it began, whether the dog remains alert and coordinated, and what other symptoms appear.
Record a video when it is safe to do so. Trembling, shivering, muscle twitching, and seizures can look different, and a video may help the veterinarian distinguish them.

Check the Whole Dog, Not Just the Tremor
Look at posture, walking, eye movement, gum color, breathing, temperature exposure, appetite, and whether the dog can respond normally. Ear pain may cause head shaking rather than whole-body trembling. Abdominal pain may produce a tense posture, panting, and reluctance to move.
Young puppies that have not eaten and become weak, sleepy, or shaky need urgent advice because low blood sugar can worsen quickly.

Do Not Treat Blindly at Home

When Shaking May Be a Seizure
Loss of awareness, falling over, stiffening, paddling, jaw movements, urination, or a confused period afterward can indicate seizure activity. Keep the dog away from stairs and hard edges, do not place hands near the mouth, time the episode, and seek emergency guidance for a prolonged or repeated seizure.
