Shih Tzu Coughing Guide
A cough can sound dry, wet, honking, gagging, or like repeated throat clearing. The sound alone rarely identifies the cause. Timing, triggers, breathing effort, exposure to other dogs, heart and airway history, and a clear video give the veterinarian more useful information.
Because Shih Tzus are short-faced, coughing paired with labored breathing, blue or pale gums, collapse, overheating, or inability to settle is an emergency.
Arrange an Appointment
- Coughing persists or becomes more frequent
- Episodes occur during sleep or at rest
- There is fever, nasal discharge, poor appetite, or fatigue
- The dog coughs after drinking, eating, or leash pressure
- There was recent boarding, grooming, daycare, or dog exposure
Seek Emergency Care
- Open-mouth breathing at rest
- Blue, gray, or very pale gums
- Collapse or severe weakness
- Pronounced abdominal breathing effort
- Pink foam or fluid from the mouth or nose
Record the Pattern
Note whether coughing follows excitement, exercise, eating, drinking, sleep, pulling on a collar, or a change in temperature. Count how many episodes occur, how long they last, and how quickly normal breathing returns. Record appetite, energy, fever, nasal discharge, gagging, vomiting, and resting breathing rate.
Video the entire dog so posture and chest effort are visible. A cough that cannot be reproduced during the visit can still be evaluated more accurately with a recording.
Problems That Can Cause Coughing
- Respiratory infection
- Often associated with exposure to other dogs, nasal signs, fever, or reduced energy.
- Airway irritation or collapse
- May be triggered by excitement, neck pressure, heat, or activity.
- Heart disease
- Can be associated with coughing at rest, faster sleeping breathing, poor stamina, or fainting.
- Foreign material or swallowing problem
- May cause sudden coughing, gagging, or distress around eating and drinking.
- Lung disease
- Pneumonia and other conditions may cause cough with fever, weakness, or increased breathing effort.
Safer Steps Until the Cause Is Known
- Use a well-fitted harness and avoid neck pressure.
- Pause strenuous exercise and keep the dog cool.
- Avoid smoke, aerosols, fragrances, and dusty rooms.
- Keep the dog away from other dogs if infection is possible.
- Do not give human cough or cold medicine.
- Follow isolation and testing advice from the veterinarian.
Coughing Versus Reverse Sneezing
A reverse sneeze usually involves rapid inward snorts with the neck extended and resolves within a short episode. A cough is an outward forceful expiration and may end with a gag. Videos are helpful because owners understandably use the same words for several different sounds.

Can a collar cause coughing?
Pressure on the throat can trigger coughing or gagging, but repeated episodes still deserve evaluation because underlying airway disease may be present.
Is kennel cough always mild?
No. Many dogs recover uneventfully, but puppies, seniors, and dogs with airway or other health problems can become more ill.
Should I use honey or cough syrup?
Ask the veterinarian first. Human products may contain unsafe ingredients and can delay diagnosis of a serious cause.
